I listen to a ton of music – old and new. I am a power user at eMusic.com (300 downloads a month), I am constantly given demos to listen to and recommendations from music fiend desk jockey friends, and I play with lots of young acts on the road. Having said that, most of it registers with me as – kind of cool, pleasant, moderate, or outright shitty. I guess my point is there is LOTS of music to choose from these days but not a lot of great choices among it.

One of my most fruitful sources of music discovery is the other members of Assembly of Dust. Often on our road trips someone busts an iPod to unveil their most recent discovery. It was during one such exchange that I encountered the Buffalo Killers. They seem like guys that walked out of the 70’s and by accident, landed here. Their playing is raw and almost guttural. It seems like their native language. I guess the real point is that it cut through the clutter – the clutter of mediocre music that is. I liked it from the first listen and have enjoyed it every listen since.

When I was thinking about a guest for the song “Pedal Down” they struck me as the perfect fit. I’m not sure if they have gone out to listen to other songs we have recorded but they may be surprised by the more tender side of AOD. “Pedal Down” is definitely more on the ROCK end of the spectrum of our folk-rock catalogue of tunes. I have never actually met Zach or Andrew Gabbard – I just sent an email via their website and lo and behold, a week later they were on our record. My hope is that one of these days we can get out and do some shows. If nothing else, I would just like to see the Buffalo Killers perform live.
